THINGS BUILT

Projects

I’ve spent most of my career somewhere between architecture, product thinking and implementation. These are a few public points on that line.

Enterprise intranets and Microsoft 365

As CTO at Attollo I worked across product, architecture and delivery for intranet and digital workplace solutions on SharePoint and Microsoft 365. The work ranged from product architecture to customer implementations and community education.

A useful independent receipt: the Attollo team appears in Nielsen Norman Group’s 2021 Intranet Design Annual winners for the Keysight project.

Red Plane

2014 · Consultancy

Using emerging technology to change how businesses work

Red Plane was my consultancy around SharePoint, Office 365, Azure and custom software. A 2014 launch article describes the aim in fairly plain terms: understand how organisations work and communicate, then use technology to improve it.

The article also records previous consulting work with national brands including Unilever and Kellogg’s.

PowerUp365

Community / media experiment

Making the Microsoft 365 firehose understandable

A recurring update and practical-learning format around Office 365 and the surrounding ecosystem. The idea was simple: Microsoft shipped faster than most people could reasonably track, so somebody needed to filter the noise and explain the useful parts.

FROM PRODUCT TO EXPERIMENT

The projects change. The habit is the same.

Find an emerging capability. Work out where it becomes useful. Then find the edge cases that make it real.

Experiments

VR development

Live-building PowerApps from inside AltspaceVR in 2017, partly because it was possible and partly to find out whether it was remotely sensible.

Mixed reality at work

Exploring SharePoint Spaces and the difference between a compelling demo and an interface that earns a place in everyday work.
