Whilst following a friends post and discussion about Climate Change and the urgency of action on Facebook yesterday I came across a very interesting statement:
“If the average American cut just a quarter pound of beef a week from their diet, about one hamburger, it would be the equivalent of taking 10 million cars off the road for a year.” – Sujatha Bergen, Natural Resources Defence Council Health Campaigns Director
I’ve been aware of the meat production and consumptions impact on the environment for some time and have been cutting down on meat over recent years (mainly thanks to Amy cooking most of my dinners!) but I think this year is time for a bit more action.
This year I pledge to consciously cut down on my meat consumption and have at least one “Meat Free” day a week.
Let me clarify some points
1) I am a meat lover
2) This isn’t about vegetarianism or veganism or any other “label”. I do not see either of those in my future
3) People think climate change and the point of no return is too expensive or too hard. Not true. Meat production is one of the largest contributors and if all of us cut down on meat consumption then our marginal gains will make a HUGE difference.
4) This is the only time I’ll make a “big deal” about it. It’s not a mission to go and annoy everyone.
